How to change the mindset of doctors who are loyal to the use of antibiotics?
Raise awareness of the risk of antimicrobial resistance. There is a real threat that we won’t have as many effective antibiotics in the future. Particularly in wound management, we can easily replace topical antibiotic treatment with antimicrobial dressings. When systemic antibiotics are used, prescribing should strictly follow current medical guidelines. For example, systemic antibiotics should only be used for obvious infections in diabetic foot ulcers. Bacterial sampling and selection of the most effective antibiotic for the specific species of bacteria is also mandatory. It is a misconception that systemic antibiotics generally promote wound healing. It should also be noted that topical antibiotic creams have been shown to be less effective and carry a high risk of resistance.
